Description
"Santuario de Bocana" is a truly remarkable 53-acre sanctuary nestled 3000 feet above the ocean, just 8 miles from the coast road. This unique property offers breathtaking views of its surroundings, including the majestic Bocana waterfall, a stunning 300-foot cascade, a bowl-shaped valley, and vistas extending towards Cano Island and the sea. With a dozen potential house sites, it presents an idyllic setting for those seeking a serene and natural retreat.
This expansive property already features two houses, a garage with a bodega, a storage building, a laundry house, a greenhouse, and accommodations for goats and chickens. The landscape boasts a bamboo grove, a cluster of cacao trees, and a variety of fruit trees. Formerly a coffee farm and banana plantation, the property has a well and access to the community water supply system, along with a seasonal spring-fed pond.
Road frontage surrounds the property, and six separate entrances provide access to well-maintained interior roads. The property also features a permaculture-influenced agricultural area, suitable for food cultivation and animal husbandry.
The two custom-designed houses on the property are unique in their charm and character. They were a collaborative effort between the owners and Mick Clement, an English designer, builder, and artist residing in the Chirripo area. Locally sourced wood from the Diamante Valley was predominantly used in their construction. The sanctuary's surroundings are bordered by Boracayan, a 2500-acre nature reserve encompassing one of the six most diverse bio regions in the country. The reserve is home to a rich array of wildlife, including howler monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, jaguars, pumas, white-tailed deer, and many other species. It's a prime location for birdwatching, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.
Sanctuaries as pristine and well-preserved as Santuario de Bocana, located in close proximity to the coast, are a rare find and highly sought after. The area's appeal is further enhanced by the nearby Marino Ballena, a protected marine park and the birthplace of humpback whales from both the northern and southern hemispheres.
For the past two decades, the current owners have carefully stewarded Santuario de Bocana, preserving its natural beauty and diversity, despite being able to visit only during holiday periods.
The property is situated near the village of San Luis Morete, which overlooks the iconic 'Whale's Tail.' This welcoming community boasts a school, clinic, church, community salon, soccer field, and a small cafe and provisions store.Santuario de Bocana is now available for new caretakers who share a deep appreciation for the natural world and a commitment to preserving this extraordinary sanctuary.
